What Is My Car Leaking?

You do not need to know what a rear main seal is. You need to know if that spot on the driveway means tow truck or “probably fine.”

Text us a photo from your driveway

Snap a photo of the puddle (and where on the car it drips from, if you can). Text it to Mac's — we will tell you if it sounds like a Monday problem or a today problem.

Mixed fluids, dirty pavement, and old stains lie. Color is a clue — not a diagnosis. When unsure, text a photo or schedule inspection.

Clear / watery

Usually low urgency

Air conditioning condensation (most common in Florida)

After running A/C in humid Lakeland air, water drips from the evaporator drain under the passenger area. Clear, odorless, dries fast — especially in summer.

Drive or tow? Yes — this is normal when the A/C has been running. If water appears with sweet smell or green tint, it is not just condensation.

Dark brown / black

Schedule inspection

Engine oil, gear oil, or old brake fluid

Fresh engine oil looks amber on the dipstick but dries dark on pavement. Slow seep from valve cover, pan gasket, or drain plug washer is common. Gear oil from diffs is thicker and stinks.

Drive or tow? Check dipstick level. If low or oil light came on — do not drive. If level OK and drip is small, schedule inspection soon — not months.

Bright red / pink

Inspect soon

Automatic transmission fluid, power steering fluid, or some coolant dyes

Trans fluid is oily and slick — often center of car. Power steering can be similar red tint. Some coolants use red dye — smell sweet? Could be coolant.

Drive or tow? Check trans dipstick if equipped — do not overfill. Slip, delay, or smell burning? Short trip to shop only. Power steering leak causes stiff steering and noise.

Green / orange / yellow / purple

High urgency

Engine coolant (antifreeze)

Coolant color depends on brand — green, orange (Dex-Cool), yellow, even pink/purple. Sweet maple-syrup smell is the tell. Leaks from hoses, radiator, water pump, or heater core.

Drive or tow? Check reservoir cold. Low or empty — do not drive far. Overheating risk in Florida heat is immediate. Tow if gauge climbs or steam shows.

Light brown / tan

High urgency if brake fluid

Brake fluid or dirty engine oil

Brake fluid is clear when new but absorbs moisture and looks tea-colored on older cars. Leak near wheels or firewall is brake hydraulics — not oil.

Drive or tow? Soft pedal or fluid near a wheel — tow, do not drive. Engine oil can look tan when mixed with water on pavement — still check level.

Blue / green soapy

Low urgency

Windshield washer fluid

Usually front of car, smells like glass cleaner. Reservoir crack or loose hose — annoying, not catastrophic.

Drive or tow? Yes — top off washer fluid and fix when convenient unless flooding electronics (rare).

Quick checklist at the puddle

  1. 1.Note color, smell, and location under the car (front, middle, rear, which side).
  2. 2.Fresh leak vs old stain — rub with paper towel; fresh is wet and colored.
  3. 3.Check relevant levels: oil dipstick, coolant reservoir (engine cold), brake fluid reservoir.
  4. 4.Look for accompanying symptoms: overheating, soft brakes, slip, oil light, sweet cabin smell.
  5. 5.Photo the puddle and the area above it — text to shop for quick triage.
How can I tell if the puddle is from my car?

Park on clean dry pavement overnight. Fresh spot under the engine or trans area is yours. Clear water under the passenger side after A/C use is normal in Florida.

Is a small oil spot OK?

A dime-size spot after sitting may be seep — still track it. Growing spot or low dipstick is not OK. Do not “just add oil” forever.

Can rain wash away the color clue?

Yes — look after dry weather or put cardboard under the car. Photo wet puddle before it dries when possible.

Do you charge to look at a photo?

Quick triage by text is part of being a local shop — we will tell you if it sounds urgent. Full diagnosis requires inspection in the bay.
