Used Car Pre-Purchase Inspections

Don't Buy Someone Else's Headache

You are about to hand someone thousands of dollars for a rolling mystery. A professional PPI is the cheapest insurance you will buy that day.

Private sellers and small lots in Polk County move a lot of cars with “runs great” and a fresh detail. Heat hides overheating history. New air freshener hides mold. A wiped dipstick hides neglect.

Mac's pre-purchase inspection is built for buyers — not sellers. We work for you, document what we find, and explain it in plain language before you wire money or sign title.

Bring the vehicle to our shop at 1620 George Jenkins Blvd, Lakeland — or coordinate inspection before you commit if the seller will bring it in. Either way: inspect before you buy, not after you regret.

What a real PPI covers at Mac's

Computer scan & readiness

  • Read stored and pending OBD-II codes
  • Note monitors not ready (can affect FL inspection)
  • Live data snapshot where relevant — misfire, fuel trim, temp

Under hood & fluids

  • Oil level, condition, and obvious leaks
  • Coolant level, color, and hose condition — Florida heat kills neglected cooling
  • Battery test and charging system check
  • Belts, visible vacuum lines, and fluid seep points

Brakes, tires & suspension

  • Pad and rotor measurements where accessible
  • Tire tread depth, age, and uneven wear patterns
  • Visual suspension and steering wear — boots, leaks, play

Road test (when safe & permitted)

  • Transmission shift quality, slip, or harsh engagement
  • Steering pull, vibration, and brake pulse
  • A/C vent temperature at idle and off idle
  • Abnormal noises under load

Structure & corrosion

  • Visible frame and subframe rust — common concern on older FL imports from salt states
  • Signs of prior collision repair or mismatched panels
  • Undercarriage fluid paths — active vs old seep

Documentation you can use

  • Plain-language summary of findings — major, moderate, monitor
  • Photos of significant concerns when applicable
  • Fair leverage for negotiation — or walk-away clarity

Who this is for

  • Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist buyers meeting in parking lots
  • Used car lots without a shop you trust — third-party eyes before sign
  • Parents buying a first car for a student in Polk County
  • Out-of-state title cars — humidity and deferred maintenance show up fast here

What we do not do

  • Teardown of engine or transmission — PPI is evaluation, not rebuild quote unless agreed separately.
  • Guarantee the car will never break — we report condition today, not predict every future failure.
  • Seller-paid “clean bill” for lot advertising — we do not whitewash findings for the person who is not our customer.

Logistics

1620 George Jenkins Blvd, Lakeland, FL 33815

Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Schedule before you buy when possible. Same-day slots when bay capacity allows — call ahead.

Inspection fee depends on vehicle type and depth requested. We quote before we start — no surprise bill after you are emotionally attached to the car.

Can the seller refuse to let me inspect the car?

Walk away. Refusal to allow independent inspection is a answer. Good sellers meet at a shop or bring the car in.

Should I inspect before or after I negotiate price?

Before final payment. Negotiate on condition with facts — our report gives you numbers for pads, tires, leaks, and codes.

Will you tell me not to buy the car?

We will tell you what we would do if it were our money. Sometimes that is walk. Sometimes it is buy and budget for brakes.

Do you inspect cars from Carvana or online dealers?

We inspect local deliveries when you can get the vehicle to our bay during the return window. Timing matters — book early in the trial period.

If I buy it, will you fix what you find?

Yes — same shop, same warranty on qualifying repairs. Many PPI customers become long-term maintenance clients. That is the point.

Mac's Auto Repair written warranty — 24 months and 24,000 miles on qualifying repairs
